Castles in Cork - Mallow Castle, County Cork

Mallow Castle

Rent a luxury Castle in Co Cork, Ireland in an area described by the Robb Report as a ‘Golfer’s Paradise’. Mallow Castle is available for exclusive rental where guests can play a different course each day of the week, including the world-famous Ballybunion and Old Head of Kinsale Golf Courses. A warm inviting home with an engaging staff of family retainers, this fine castle was the 16th-century seat of the Lord President of Munster and the home of this family for four centuries. You may stroll through the eight-hectare (20 acre) deer park, where over 100 white deer roam freely (a christening gift from Queen Elizabeth I to her god-daughter). The ‘new’ castle, occupied since 1689, overlooks the stately ‘old’ castle ruins, a national historic monument.

The estate, on the Blackwater River, provides five kilometres (two miles) of the finest private salmon fishing in Ireland. You may persuade the lord of the manor to appoint you a ‘Seneschal’ to hold ‘Baron’s Court’ - a power granted to him by King James I in a document in the castle library, where you can immerse yourself in an eclectic collection of historic and modern Irish and other works. Alternatively, you could play the Bechstein concert grand piano in the music room, enjoy a game of snooker in the billiard room or a quiet drink before the fire in the magnificent elm-panelled drawing room.

Ground floor: Large panelled drawing room. Dining room with seating for 20. Library. Billiard room. Music room. Morning room.
First floor: Seven principal bedrooms, five with double and two with twin beds. Six bathrooms.

The castle is rented with full-time staff, including a cook. Basic rent covers up to eight, with supplement for additional guests. Heating and electricity are included. Guests pay for food, wines, alcohol, telephone calls, golf and fishing.

Conveniently located in a large market town in the heart of Ireland’s south-west, the castle is within a short drive of the country’s major tourist attractions, such as the Blarney Stone, Lakes of Killarney, Bunratty Folk Park, Rock of Cashel, Cork and Kinsale. Dublin is just over two hours by train.

The staff look after the castle and it’s guests with devotion and the cook will prepare delicious meals, using the best of local produce, while the castle garden provides fresh fruit and vegetables.
